When we are talking about the Muay Thai clinch, probably one of the first things you need to know is the proper way to control your opponents head. Ive seen alot of guys lace their fingers, and try to hold the back of the neck. You should always try to control the back of the opponents head, aiming for the crown while cusping rather then lacing your fingers together. When starting from the clinch, I recommend trying to get your elbows on the opponents collar bone for a more effective clinch. The Muay Thai clinch is serious business, especially if your opponent is unfamiliar with technique.

When standing with your opponent, try to be square with your opponent. I often refer to this as going dick to dick, in an effort to explain it best as possible. If your opponent is clinching up with you, be sure to keep your head some what on his shoulder next to his ear while attempting to counter his clinch by maintaining on control of your opponents head with one hand while using the other to hold his arm right where the elbow starts to move into the fore arm region. Drilling this particular technique to defend your opponents clinch can have great benefits over time.

Alot of people forget to spin their opponent in the clinch while delivering knee's, the idea here is to keep them some what off balance while you set up to bring the pain with knee's. Dont forget about your elbows while practicing or employing this technique, they are one of your more nastier tools that can open up a huge cut on your opponent in seconds.

The Muay Thai clinch can be a very dangerous technique as noted above, and even the best fighters in the world often find it difficult to escape the grasp of a well trained Muay Thai Fighter(see Spider vs. Franklin). Ive personally been caught in this technique quite a few times, and have found it rather difficult to deal with especially against a much larger and stronger opponent. The best thing to do against the Thai Clinch, is to stay out of it. Its well worth your time to work on this technique and to get as familiar with it as possible. Otherwise, it could very well be the end of you shall you find yourself caught in it.
